Thonglor Locals Discover Hidden Nature Walks Tourists Never Find
While visitors queue for rooftop bars along Sukhumvit Soi 55, Thonglor's most devoted wellness crowd is slipping into pockets of green that barely appear on any map.
How we reported this

The regulars are out by 6 a.m. Not at a gym. Not at a rooftop yoga deck. They are walking the canal-side path behind Soi Thonglor 13, where the khlong runs quiet enough that you can hear the egrets land. This stretch, roughly 800 metres of shaded embankment that most Grab drivers have never been asked to navigate toward, has become one of the most talked-about informal fitness routes in the neighbourhood. No entrance fee. No app required. Just shoes and early enough timing to beat the heat.
The timing matters more than ever right now. July in Bangkok runs hot and unforgiving past 8 a.m., with afternoon humidity regularly sitting above 80 percent. But it is also the month when the canal-side vegetation along Thonglor's eastern edge is at its densest, pulling the temperature on the embankment path down by a noticeable three to four degrees compared with the main road. For the growing cohort of residents who treat outdoor movement as non-negotiable, not a trend but a daily prescription, these micro-corridors of shade are the whole point.
The Routes the Neighbourhood Actually Uses
Two spots keep coming up in conversation at the juice counters along Thonglor Road. The first is Benchasiri Park's less-photographed northern loop. Most visitors stop at the lake for a photograph and leave. The northern loop, accessible from the Sukhumvit Soi 24 entrance, adds another 1.2 kilometres of tree-lined gravel that circles behind the sculpture garden. On weekday mornings before 7 a.m., the path is populated almost entirely by local residents doing their second or third lap, not tourists. The park opens at 5 a.m. and admission remains free.
The second is the stretch connecting the back of J Avenue on Thonglor Soi 15 down toward the smaller community pocket behind Thonglor Soi 17. It is not a formally designated trail. It requires cutting through a section of low-rise residential soi that feels more like Phra Khanong than central Thonglor, and that is precisely why it works. The tree canopy from private properties overhangs the lane for much of its length. Residents who have been walking it since 2022 describe the 40-minute round trip, out through Soi 17, back via the khlong path, as their standard before-work circuit.
Bangkok's Department of Parks and Green Spaces recorded a 22 percent rise in registered morning walkers at city parks between January 2024 and March 2026, according to figures cited in a Bangkok Metropolitan Administration briefing earlier this year. The Watthana district, which covers Thonglor, accounted for a disproportionate share of that increase relative to its geographic size. Fitness tracking app data shared publicly by Strava in its 2025 Metro Report listed Sukhumvit Soi 55 among the top 15 most active walking corridors in Bangkok by total logged distance, but the app's segment data showed the bulk of that activity happening on the quieter sois branching east off the main road, not on Thonglor Road itself.
Making the Most of It Before the Crowd Finds It
The practical reality is that these routes stay pleasant because relatively few people know to treat them as routes. The Benchasiri northern loop in particular remains unmarked on Google Maps walking directions as of July 2026. The BMA has been expanding its community trail signage program, called the Bangkok Green Walk Initiative, in districts including Watthana since late 2025, which means formal wayfinding could arrive within the next 12 to 18 months.
For now, the window is open. Start at Benchasiri before 6:30 a.m. to catch the northern loop in full shade. Bring water, the nearest refill point is the vending machines at the Sukhumvit Soi 22 park entrance, priced at 10 baht per 600ml bottle. Anyone dealing with heat sensitivity or managing a health condition should check with a local medical professional before committing to outdoor exercise in July humidity. The egrets along the Soi 13 khlong path do not wait for ideal conditions. Neither do the locals who have already claimed it.
