The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration opened two new family cycling corridors on July 5, 2026, linking Yaowarat Road with the shaded loops inside Rommaninat Park and the Charoen Krung riverfront path.
Parents in the district have asked for safer places to cycle with children after traffic volumes on main arteries rose 18 percent in the first half of 2026, according to city transport data. The new lanes use physical barriers and timed signals at three intersections, cutting crossing times for groups on bikes to under 90 seconds.
Two routes that stay flat and shaded
The shorter loop starts at Odeon Circle, follows the new painted lane down Yaowarat for 800 metres, then turns into Rommaninat Park where riders circle the central lawn twice before returning the same way. The second route begins at the same circle, heads south on Charoen Krung for one kilometre to the riverfront boardwalk, and returns via the quieter Plaeng Nam side street. Both paths avoid steep grades and keep riders away from the busiest market stalls after 9 a.m.
The Chinatown Wellness Initiative runs free helmet fittings every Saturday at 7 a.m. outside Wat Traimit and supplies 40 child seats and 25 tag-along bikes on a first-come basis. A local repair stand set up by the same group at the park entrance charges 150 baht for a full safety check and basic adjustments.
Numbers that matter for planning
City records show 1,240 family passes issued for the new lanes in the first five days. Standard bike rental at the Rommaninat kiosk costs 120 baht for two hours; family packages that include two adult bikes, two child bikes and four helmets run 450 baht. Morning temperatures at 7 a.m. have averaged 29 degrees Celsius this month, so the district health office recommends finishing rides before 9:30 a.m.
Riders can download the free BMA Bike app to check real-time lane availability and report any debris or broken barriers. The same app lists the next helmet-fitting session and the phone number for the on-site mechanic. Families who start this weekend will find the lanes freshly painted and the rental fleet stocked for the July school break.
