Chatuchak Opens Free Fitness Programs for 500+ Seniors Across Five Parks
The local council is rolling out no-cost group exercise sessions for residents aged 60 and over, starting this month at venues from Lat Phrao Road to the Kampaeng Phet green corridor.
How we reported this

Chatuchak District Office confirmed this week that five community parks within its jurisdiction will host free structured fitness sessions for senior residents beginning July 14, 2026. The program, called Chatuchak Active Elders, runs six days a week and requires no registration fee, no equipment, and no prior fitness experience. It is the district's largest investment in older-adult wellness in at least a decade.
The timing matters. Bangkok's Department of Older Persons reported earlier this year that adults aged 65 and over now represent roughly 20 percent of Chatuchak's registered population, a figure that has climbed steadily since the 2020 census. Chronic conditions linked to physical inactivity, including type 2 diabetes and hypertension, account for two in every five hospital outpatient visits at Vibhavadi-Rangsit Road's Paolo Hospital Kaset campus. District health officers say structured community exercise is one of the cheapest interventions they can deploy without straining the public health budget.
Sessions will run at Rot Fai Park on Kamphaeng Phet 3 Road, the district's largest green space and already home to a popular evening walking circuit, as well as at the smaller Chatuchak Park Annex near the Mo Chit BTS station plaza, Soi Phahon Yothin 34 community garden, Ladprao 71 neighbourhood square, and the shaded pavilion at Wat Phrasri Mahathat on Phahon Yothin Road. Each venue will have two certified fitness instructors present, supplied through a partnership with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's Health Promotion Division.
What the Sessions Actually Look Like
The program draws on a low-impact curriculum developed by Mahidol University's Faculty of Physical Therapy, adapted for participants with limited mobility or joint conditions. Each 50-minute session opens with 10 minutes of seated stretching, moves into 25 minutes of guided aerobic movement, think gentle rhythmic stepping and resistance band exercises, not boot camp, and closes with balance and coordination drills shown to reduce fall risk. Falls are a serious concern: the World Health Organization estimates that roughly 684,000 fatal falls occur globally each year, with adults over 60 accounting for the large majority.
Rot Fai Park sessions begin at 7:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. daily except Sundays. The Ladprao 71 square hosts a single morning session at 7:30 a.m. on weekdays only. Participants are strongly encouraged to consult their personal physician or a local clinic before joining, particularly those managing cardiovascular conditions. The Chatuchak District Health Centre on Kamphaeng Phet 2 Road offers free pre-participation health screenings every Tuesday and Thursday morning through the end of August.
Getting Involved Before August
No formal sign-up is required for most venues, residents can simply show up in comfortable clothes and rubber-soled shoes. The Soi Phahon Yothin 34 location is the exception: capacity there is capped at 30 participants per session due to space constraints, and names can be added to a roster at the district office on Phahon Yothin Road, or by calling the Chatuchak Health Promotion hotline at 02-272-4598.
The district office has also confirmed that water stations and portable shade structures will be installed at all five venues by July 12, a practical acknowledgment that Bangkok's July heat index regularly pushes past 40 degrees Celsius by mid-morning. Participants showing up for early sessions will find the conditions most manageable before 8:30 a.m.
For residents who cannot travel to a park, the district's Line Official Account (@chatuchakdistrict) will broadcast three 30-minute home exercise videos each week starting July 21, produced in collaboration with the same Mahidol team behind the in-person curriculum. Residents over 70 living alone can also request a home welfare check from the district's elder care officers by contacting the same hotline. The Chatuchak Active Elders program is funded through the 2026 Bangkok Metropolitan Health Budget and is confirmed through December 31 of this year, with a review scheduled for January 2027.
