Chatuchak Vendors Gain Digital Tools Via New District Partnerships
The Smart Economy Showcase and a navigation app are connecting local vendors to technology in north Bangkok's main market district.
How we reported this
The Digital Economy Promotion Agency and Chatuchak District Office have formed a partnership under the Smart Economy Showcase project to promote entrepreneurs in Lat Phrao and Pathum Wan with 12 digital startup technologies.
Project reaches selected businesses
More than 50 startups in the pilot areas were chosen to receive digital transformation courses and business capability improvements through the initiative. Chatuchak remains a residential and transport-connected district in north Bangkok whose economy centers on the weekend market rather than a concentrated technology cluster. The district draws support from nearby student populations at Chandrakasem Rajabhat University and Kasetsart University, where co-working corners and cafés serve remote workers and young professionals on weekdays.
Digital Ventures, the FinTech subsidiary of Siam Commercial Bank, released the Chatuchak Guide app to add real-time navigation and e-payment features at the market. The Chatuchak Weekend Market covers 27 acres with more than 15,000 stalls and functions as a sourcing point for freelancers and startups seeking distinctive merchandise.
Retail support for small operators
Mixt Chatuchak Shopping Centre provides space for Thai SMEs at rental rates of ฿1,000 per square metre across 700 stores that stock goods from market vendors. Bangkok overall counted 177 tracked startups, representing about 84 percent of Thailand's total, and ranked third in Southeast Asia with a rise of 25 spots in the 2023 Global Ecosystem Index. Transportation, Fintech, and Ecommerce & Retail together accounted for roughly 41 percent of the city's startups at that time.
Thailand reported more than 13,000 startups nationwide, with e-commerce projected to reach $33 billion by 2025 under the Thailand 4.0 framework. The current projects in Chatuchak focus on applying these digital tools directly to the district's established market operations and nearby commercial spaces.
