Bangkok's Sports Venues See Surging Visitor Numbers After Major Infrastructure Upgrades
Public facilities across the capital record higher visits as upgrades target pitches, centers and major stadiums
How we reported this
Bangkok recorded over 11 million visits to its sports facilities in 2024, marking a 17% rise from the prior year according to data from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.
The increase reflects steady demand for public sports spaces in a dense urban setting where residents rely on BMA-managed pitches and centers for regular activity. Officials have responded by directing funds toward maintenance and new builds rather than waiting for private development to fill gaps.
Stadium One opens near National Stadium
Stadium One, positioned near the National Stadium and Chulalongkorn University, fully opened in May 2025. The site includes 129 retail stores alongside a 2,000-square-meter arena designed for community events and training sessions.
Access from central districts such as Yaowarat remains straightforward via existing transit links, giving local users an additional option without long travel. The mix of retail and active space aims to keep venues occupied throughout the day rather than only during peak hours.
Funding shifts and oversight changes
The BMA spent more than 490 million baht on sports pitches, centers and public areas in 2024 and set aside 353 million baht for similar work in 2025. At the national level the Sports Authority of Thailand announced a 5 billion baht upgrade for Rajamangala National Stadium to add smart technology and a separate 10 billion baht project for a new complex in Chon Buri.
Governor Chadchart Sittipunt halted gym equipment purchases at three BMA centers after questions arose over 103 million baht in irregular spending recorded at seven other sites. The move pauses some procurement while reviews continue.
Residents can check current opening hours and available programs directly through BMA channels before planning visits, particularly as equipment reviews affect select locations.
