Riverside Bangkok Secures Flood Mitigation Funds for Drainage Upgrades
The legislation sets aside state resources for pump stations and canal upgrades that will reach properties and roads in Riverside Bkk's riverside wards starting this fiscal year.
How we reported this
The state legislature passed the Riverside Flood Mitigation Bill 2026 on 7 July. The measure directs capital works funding to drainage upgrades in Riverside Bkk wards that sit along the main river channel.
Seasonal water levels rise each July and August. Riverside Bkk recorded repeated street flooding last year in three central wards, according to the city works department log. The bill responds to those records by listing specific canal sections for new equipment.
Changes for property owners and commuters
Residents in Riverside East and Riverside South will see contractors install two additional pump stations along the canal network. The works target blocks where water reached 40 centimetres above road level in 2025. Homeowners in those blocks can expect shorter periods of access disruption once the pumps operate.
Commuters who use the riverside road corridor will face temporary lane closures during construction phases scheduled between September and December. The legislation requires the state transport agency to publish weekly detour maps before each closure begins.
The bill document lists a total allocation of 47 million baht for Riverside Bkk projects drawn from the state infrastructure fund. City engineers will manage the spending under quarterly reporting rules set out in the legislation.
Timeline for rollout
Local ward offices must submit detailed site plans to the state public works office by 15 August. The government says the first pump station will enter service before the 2027 rainy season. Remaining canal lining work is projected to finish by March 2028.
Business owners along the affected roads can apply for temporary signage permits through the same ward offices. The process begins once the construction schedule is confirmed next month.
