Bangkok Transforms Chinatown With 580-Meter Smart City Infrastructure Overhaul

Bangkok's Chinatown, known as Yaowarat, is one of four districts prioritized in the city's new smart city urban plan. The plan includes a 580-meter web of transport intended to improve connectivity and reduce traffic. Negotiations for the projects are currently underway, with the possibility of work beginning in 2026.

Infrastructure Mandates for Yaowarat

The Yaowarat infrastructure update requires free public WiFi, pedestrian-friendly road and sidewalk extensions, upgraded lighting, improved drainage systems, and a bus system upgrade. The bus system upgrade is funded by the Thailand Science Research and Innovation. These elements are part of the same smart city effort that targets Yaowarat for connectivity improvements.

Local residents use the roads and sidewalks in the area daily for walking, vending, and commuting. Extended pedestrian space and upgraded lighting would apply directly to those routes. Improved drainage systems would address water management on the same streets where people live and work.

Transit and Development Projects

The area is also being transformed by the integration of three new MRT subway lines, blue, orange, and purple. Stations such as Sam Chai and Wat Mangkorn are designed with historical themes. A major mixed-use development, the Woeng Nakornkasem Yaowaraj project by Asset World Corp near Sam Yot MRT, is under construction and scheduled to be ready by 2029.

These changes connect to the same network of stations and roads that residents rely on for daily travel. The MRT stations and the mixed-use project sit within the district already selected for the smart city updates.

Negotiations remain in progress. The government has indicated that project start dates could fall in 2026, though final timelines depend on the outcome of those discussions.
