The Ministry of Transport confirmed that the Bangkok Bus Terminal at Chatuchak, known as Mo Chit 2, will stay in its current location and receive redevelopment instead of moving to Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Station.
The decision arrives as the Transport Company Ltd. received a 39-million-baht allocation in fiscal year 2025 to finish planning work. A further 3.6-billion-baht request is set for fiscal year 2027 to begin construction that year. Eight upgrades completed by late 2024 already include platform changes, added seating, LED schedule screens and four new entrances built to airport standards.
Daily travel patterns at Mo Chit 2 and the weekend market
Chatuchak functions as a residential and commuter district whose main economic draw remains the 15,000-stall Chatuchak Weekend Market that attracts more than 200,000 visitors each week. The market runs as a car-free zone during opening hours, and 62.77 percent of visitors already arrive by public transport. Many stall owners previously drove, yet the terminal serves as the primary interchange for buses connecting northern Bangkok routes with the rest of the city.
Young professionals living in newer condos near Mo Chit and Ratchayothin use the same terminal and nearby co-working spots along Phahonyothin for weekday travel. Students from Chandrakasem Rajabhat University and Kasetsart University also depend on the bus services and pedestrian routes around the terminal. Any change to platform layout or entrance points therefore touches commuters who move between these neighbourhoods and the market area each day.
Next steps for terminal and surrounding links
Planning work funded by the 39-million-baht allocation will shape the physical changes that begin after the 2027 construction start. A separate review of Grey and Silver Line management includes examination of a possible light-rail addition to improve transfers at the terminal. The Transport Company Ltd. continues to manage current services while these studies advance, leaving riders to navigate the existing eight upgrades and the car-free market zone in the meantime.
