Chatuchak Retains Mo Chit 2 Terminal in Place While Other Global Hubs Consider Shifts

The Ministry of Transport confirmed that Bangkok Bus Terminal Chatuchak, known as Mo Chit 2, will stay at its current site and undergo redevelopment instead of moving to Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Station.

Keeping the facility local supports the 15,000-stall Chatuchak Weekend Market, which draws over 200,000 visitors weekly, and reduces pressure on already crowded rail lines serving the district.
Local upgrades target efficiency without displacement
Chatuchak District centers on the weekend market, parks and transport links rather than a tech cluster. The area includes co-working spots near Chandrakasem Rajabhat University and along Phahonyothin Road toward Kasetsart University. Planners have focused on improving existing infrastructure at Mo Chit 2 to serve students, remote workers and stall owners who already favor public transport.
Eight major upgrades completed by late 2024 include platform revamps, new seating, LED schedule screens and four additional entrances. These changes aim to bring the terminal closer to airport standards while avoiding the disruption of a full relocation.
Budget figures and visitor data guide next steps
The Transport Company Ltd. received a 39-million-baht allocation in fiscal year 2025 to finish planning for the redevelopment. A 3.6-billion-baht budget request is slated for fiscal year 2027 to begin construction that same year. Data shows 62.77 percent of Chatuchak Market visitors already use public transport, a figure that supports keeping the terminal central rather than shifting it outward.
A separate government proposal would transfer Grey and Silver Line management from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to the Mass Rapid Transit Authority while studying a possible light rail line in Chatuchak for smoother transfers. Officials continue to review existing studies without setting new construction dates beyond the 2027 start for Mo Chit 2 work.
